Blog of the Green Mage

This Blog is kind of an extension to my Youtube Page, and they pretty much go hand-in-hand. Here I post about what video game playthroughs I am currently doing and which ones I'm thinking about doing in the future, my thoughts on games I've played and gaming news, and maybe just what's been up with me lately.

Red Steel 2 Playthrough Reboot - Part 18: Hunt for the Last Tower

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Video Description
     Several Katakara Clansmen were hurt, harmed, and injured in the making of this video. If they had just cooperated in surrendering the last Comm Tower, or at least pointing it out standing right behind my head, many of them would have been spared. At least we can get back under way now.

A bit of a short episode here, but I thought that the end of the video was the best place to end it before we get on to the next area of the game.

Let's Stream Some Skyrim

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

     It's funny because I don't even eat breakfast... Laugh, damn you!

     So, I expect a large portion of my life to be sucked straight from out of my body and into this game once it comes out. As I've mentioned before, I don't plan on doing an LP or "playthrough" of Skyrim any time soon, since the game will be too large and massive for me to do a proper one of it straight off the bat. But since I'm going to be playing the game like crazy anyway, might as well let you guys join in on the adventure through the magic of live internet streaming. Together, we'll take Skyrim by storm!... or get eaten alive trying to do it... Here's some noteworthy facts to keep in mind:

- I've pre-ordered the game and expect to have it on the day Skyrim is released: 11/11/11, and I plan on beginning the stream shortly after receiving/installing it, if not sometime before. However, this is not a definite: there are several things that could happen that prevent me from streaming the game, such as late arrival, no arrival, Stream site goes down, Bethesda/Amazon/Shipping Company screws something up, Skyrim doesn't play well with streaming (open-world Bethesda games are well-known for having several bugs on release), etc.

- As it has been a while since I last streamed, I will have one or two test streams before Skyrim's release date, in which I plan to at least get used to my old settings again as well as try and test stream Oblivion... ya know, for practice... Specific dates haven't been decided yet, but right now, I'm looking at either Nov. 2, 4, and/or 9.

- The stream will most likely be held on my Livestream account, since it's the only one I could get PC gaming to stream on decently, but might try something with UStream during one of the test streams. Both streams can be found through my blog, and this will later be updated with the definite stream link once it is decided.

- Knowing my gaming habits, I will be playing Skyrim a lot... as in, everyday. I plan to try and stream as much of me playing it as I can, so don't expect to actually catch everything I do when playing/streaming.

- If I am able to, I will upload clips from the streams here onto Youtube, in case people miss some notable moments that are worth screen time.

- Amnesia should be done or close to being done by the time Skyrim comes around, and if it isn't, I will still upload Amnesia videos on a regular basis. The same can't be said for Red Steel, though; there's still quite some ways to go through that playthrough.

- I'm actually in a situation at the moment where it's hard to test/judge audio levels, so audio might be a bit over the place in this video. Just a warning. Come to think of it, I guess I should have put this up near the top, huh? Oh well, you probably watched the video already and figured that out. Good job. I can't hear the audio that well right now, but it sure does look nice from where I'm sitting...

- More info to come, so check back later. If you have any questions, ask away.

     And then we come to this part... this very, very oddly-timed part, seeing how this is going up shortly after I got back from a cruise. Not many people I know enjoyed this area, and for the most part, neither do I; in it's defense, though, this would have gone by a bit faster and smoother had I not been having keyboard issues. Even so, I don't feel like going for a swim any time soon... or ever...

Metroid Versus Marathon Begins Today

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Another Versus Marathon has arrived, and this time, it's for Metroid! Starting at 8 PM EST tonight, three teams will be battling it out through the sci-fi franchise to claim the top crown, while raising money and donations towards charity!

This time, the usual competitors of last marathon winner Ocean City Trinity (OCT) and the TripleSpeedRunners (TSR) will be joined by Versus Newcomer Team Mountain Gaming in a 3-way competitive marathon of the Metroid franchise. Lasting for 48 hours straight , the games will be played in chronological order of when they take place in the storyline. Scoring this time around is based off of a modified point-system from Versus Marathons passed, presenting teams with 25 points for finishing a game, another 25 or 10 points for getting the 1st or 2nd fastest time completing the game, respectively, and an additional point for every percentage of the game completed (a game finished at 52% rewards the team with 52 points, while a 100% completion gives 100 points, etc.) Games have to be played and finished in the predetermined order set before the marathon (posted below), but once a team has finished all of the games, they can return back to any previous games in any order to get a better completion percentage or attempt to obtain a faster time.

All donations to charity this time around go towards Architecture for Humanity, a "wonderful organization that provides design, construction, and development services where they are most critically needed.  Some of their more recent projects include helping to rebuild Japan and Haiti after the natural disasters that happened this year and last." (GameMarathons.com Versus FAQ) Greatly exceeding their estimated mark last time, the Versus Marathoners hope to raise around $2000 or more with this marathon. The previously used "extension to marathon length based on amount of donations" will most likely not be occurring this time around, as one team will not be able to go much beyond the 48-hour limit due to real-world activities, although the other two teams may or may not continue to play beyond that limit should they decide to later (competitive scoring wrapped up, of course).

Each team can be viewed on their own personal stream, but if you wish to watch all three teams at once, look no further: the streams have conveniently been placed side-by-side for your viewing pleasure here: http://oceancitytrinity.com/

Other important links:

Game Order:
* Metroid (NES)
* Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA)
* Metroid Prime (GC)
* Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC)
* Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (WII)
* Metroid II: Return of Samus (GB)
* Super Metroid (SNES)
* Metroid: Other M (WII)
* Metroid Fusion (GBA)

Personally, I unfortunately won't be able to attend a majority of the marathon due to all of the shifts I will be working the next few days as well as all of my projects I'm working on, which is also why this marathon post is lighter in detail than previous ones. I will still be occasionally dropping in to see how things are going and where the teams stand, though, just not as often as I have for the Zelda and Mario Versus Marathons. Here's to hoping for yet another great marathon, best of luck to the teams, and most importantly, hope everyone has fun!

The Triumvirate Has Arrived!

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Happy Friday the 13th, everyone! And like I said, today marks the beginning of the Triumvirate of Summer playthroughs and Let's Plays! 3 different games, 3 different ways, on 3 different video upload sites. The video above gives a bit of a brief explanation of each game on each site. I will be trying my best to upload videos multiple times each week, posting here on my blog every time a new video goes up so that you know when and where to go and watch it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Red Steel 2 Playthrough Reboot - Part 01: Gonna Take You For A Ride

Video Description
Original Upload Date: April 2nd, 2010
Take this nice, relaxing ride through the scenic desert, getting an incredibly in-depth and up close look at the environment and landscape with your knowledgable tour guide, as well as a look at the kind, generous people who inhabit this peaceful fantastic wonderland. Trust me: that entire sentence was pure sarcasm.
Welcome to my "reboot" playthrough of Red Steel 2 for the Nintendo Wii. Re-edited and re-uploaded to include improved video and audio quality as well as the addition of "Gamree Comments", it's time I finally got around to making and finishing this playthrough which I attempted to upload over a year ago to Youtube. This is pretty much the "intro" video, so I do more explaining than actual playing, but surprisingly, this intro vid is more "action-packed" than most of the beginnings to my other playthroughs.

Summer Triumvirate of Playthroughs

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

     Summer is almost upon us, and with the college semester coming to an end, it is time that we begin a new journey!  But why hold out for just one playthrough?  I have been away for a while, so let's make up that time, shall we?  Enter The Triumvirate: the three playthroughs/Let's Plays that I will be uploading to various different video upload sites this summer.  The three games showcased in the video and that i will be uploading videos are Red Steel 2, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and The Journeyman Project Turbo!

FAQ
- The summer playthroughs will begin on Friday, May 13th, 2011. Before you ask, no, that wasn't planned; I've been trying for the past few months to get one or all of these playthroughs started in some capacity, but haven't been able to because of school and work. I finally decided last month that the best time to start them would be right after college ended for the summer. After that decision, I looked at the calender: my last day of school was Thursday, May 12th. The very next day was Friday the 13th. Seeing how 13 is my number, there couldn't have been a better, stronger sign than that for beginning the game videos on that day.

- Assuming I can get my butt into gear and aren't burdened down by unexpected events that suck up my free time, there will be multiple uploads each week.

- Each playthrough/Let's Play will be hosted exclusively on a different video upload site. Links will be given later on.

- Because I tried to upload the video playthrough here on youtube about a year ago but ran into several problems when trying to do so, the Red Steel 2 Playthrough is a "Reboot." This means that a majority of the game footage/commentary was done a year ago, but the videos have been re-edited and improved upon significantly to take advantage of my new video editing skills.

- The Amnesia: The Dark Descent Playthrough will not be vocally commentated, but instead through the text-based comments that can be found in many of my videos. The reasoning for this will be explained in the actual playthrough. The other two games will have regular commentary.

- The Amnesia: The Dark Descent playthrough will also be my first playthrough uploaded in 1080p. Because of that, consistent uploads will be harder for it since the file sizes will be significantly larger and therefore take much longer to upload.

- Because Youtube says so, this video has been blocked in Germany. Sorry, Germans! -.-;

- As for the Let's Plays for the Portal games... those are still in the works, but the exact date or time for when I will be doing them is anybody's guess right now, mine included.

- That wasn't too bad for someone who doesn't listen to music, eh?

This was the main picture I had been using for quite some time while doing my video playthroughs over on Youtube.  When I was first beginning to plan on doing video playthroughs through the handle of "Gamree the Green Mage" (the name of one of my own personal characters I created for my stories a long time ago, and by far one of my more favorite characters), I decided that I would need a good picture/image/icon  that best represented that character as closely as possible (because I suck at art and drawing... unless we're talking about a stick-figure competition, then I might stand a fighting chance).  So, little ol' me went on to tried-and-true Google and did an image search for, "Green [insert forgotten word here]" (thought for certain I did a search for "Green Mage", but recent searches suggest otherwise), and I came across this picture (but not on its original site.)  It is an incredible picture, at least in my humble opinion, and of all the "Green Mage" pictures I had come across and looked at, this one just seemed to click with not just the character of Gamree the Green Mage I have in my head, but also with my style of humor and commentary in a way.  Of course, just like 90% of other people on the internet, I just insta-saved the picture and used it as my profile picture on Youtube, with it later becoming kind of like an avatar for my channel.
     I grew attached to the picture, though, and eventually decided to try and hunt down where the original picture was and the artist who made it to try and get actual permission to use the picture not just on my channel, but also maybe in my videos if I ever felt the need to.  Until I got the permission, I changed my YT avatar over to a more generic G-Emblem, which I've been using for the past several months.  For some odd reason, I could have sworn that I found the picture over on DeviantArt, so I spent most of my time searching over there for it.  Image searches on Google for "Green Mage" kept redirecting me to the picture, but only in my usage of it on the web, not where it originally came from.  Then, a couple months down the line, I finally found it: the picture's orignal site over on Elfwood.com.  I fired off a message to the artist, Teemu U. Helenius, sometime late last year explaining how much I liked the picture and would l love to use it as an avatar for my Youtube channel/account.  I told him that I would credit him as the artist and owner of the picture and even make a short video about it.  He replied back saying that it would be fine, and that he was glad to hear how much I enjoyed the art and that I asked for permission to use it.
     Shortly afterwards, though, is when my college transfer came in, and I was forced to work things out between the college I was leaving and the one I was heading to, as well as get things moved out of my apartment since I was moving between cities.  Life became busy because of that, and I completely forgot about making the video or this blog post, and still hadn't changed my avatar over from the G-Emblem to the Green Wizard.  Now with the college semester almost over and my re-entrance back into consistently making videos, it's time I dawned the avatar again, and before I do, I need to hold true to my promises and write this blog post and upload that video, which can be seen below.  You can check out Teemu Helenius' other work over on his Elfwood account. I don't think he has used it in quite a while and has moved on to other things/projects, but he still has some other fantasy artwork on his profile that you can view if you are interested.
     So I just want to thank Mr. Helenius for an awesome picture and for giving me permission to use it for my Youtube shenanigans, and hope that my use of it will bring it even more popularity.

Also, here is the video I uploaded onto my Youtube channel about the picture:

Mario Versus Marathon Has Begun!

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

The Mario Versus Marathon has begun!  The Marathon will be running for 60 hours or longer, depending on how many donations are raised towards charity for DC Outreach.  As my current living situation has changed from last time, and I therefore no longer have as much free-time on my hands as I did before, I won't be able to keep this post up-to-date with the going-ons during the marathon as I did with the last one, but nonetheless, there is still a chance that some minor edits and changes will be made to this post as the Versus Mariothon progresses.  And as I did with the last marathon, I have also taken the liberty in embedding both streams into this post so that you can view either one, or even both simultaneously, whenever you please.  This same format  (albeit side-by-side) can also be found on the Triple Speed Runners' Homepage if you would prefer to watch them there, as well.

     Again, all donations will be going towards DC Outreach, whose focus is on a rare disease called Dyskeratosis Congenita, and they’re looking to research, treat, and support families of someone with this disease.  Currently, the donations widget can be found on the Versus Marathon Web Page as well as on the Triple Speed Runners' Homepage. Also, I have presented the ChipIn Widget in this post down below for easy access.

     There is no middle-man; your money goes straight to the charity, so you know your money goes safely into good hands.  Your donations could possibly also affect how the marathon runs, as well as net you some pretty nice prizes!  From Ocean City Trinity's Blog:
"Remember, your donation could affect the show or win you a prize!  Here’s the skinny on that:
* Certain incremental donations will increase the overall length of the marathon, allowing us to continue the insanity a bit longer.  Once we’ve reached $780 in donations, the marathon will have reached its longest point and last for 72 hours.  See the FAQ for more details on how this works.
* Anyone who donates $30 or more has the option to override the order in which we play the game and select the next game we race each other on (provided it hasn’t already been played).
* Triple Speed Runners will be raffling off a Wii bundle at the end of the marathon.  Every $10 you donate will give you one ticket towards this raffle.
* Ocean City Trinity will be giving away smaller prizes to be announced periodically during the show.  They’ll come up with a random dollar amount, tell you a range it’s between, and whoever’s donation increments the total above this amount wins the prize."
     Also, from the Mario Versus Marathon FAQ...:
Q: What does the winner get?
A: The right to nominate the games to be played for the next versus marathon. And bragging rights.

Q: What about the loser?
A: They have to do the Mario. Like in the cartoon.

Bring in the New Year with a Mario Versus Marathon!

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

     Yep, it's time for another awesome Versus Marathon, hosted by GameMarathons.com.  For the uninitiated, you might be asking, "Versus... Marathon?  Well, what makes it so different from your average-,"  in which I would then rudely interrupt your thoughts with an answer.  GameMarathons.com's Versus Marathons aren't simple runs through a ton of games, but also a competition, in which 2+ teams compete against one another in a point-based system, as they vie for supremacy and the bragging rights that come with being declared the winners, all the while raising money towards charity!

     For those who missed out, the last Versus Marathon was back in September on the Legend of Zelda series, on which I did a long (and quite arduous) post on throughout its entire duration, keeping tabs on what games were being played when, and where each team stood point-wise.  ~14 Legend of Zelda games were up for play, with two teams competing in that Versus Marathon - the Triple Speed Runners (TSR) and the Ocean City Trinity (OCT) - and both have returned to once again wage war (and video games) against one another, this time not in Hyrule, but across the lands of the Mushroom Kingdom.  GameMarathons.com's Mario Versus Marathon (but since I'm lazy and love a good/bad pun, I shall lovingly dub it the Versus "Mario"-thon) will see both teams competing against one another throughout 20 games from the beloved franchise, but there will be a few slight changes compared to last time.  Where as the last Versus Marathon was based on an achievement-based system where teams completed pre-marathon specified game requirements as they played in order to earn points, the Versus Marathon this time around will be an all-out race to the finish of each and every Mario game in order to earn those points.  A brief definition from OceanCityTrinity's FAQ post:
"Q: How does the competition side of this work?
A: It’s primarily a speed run competition.  All teams will play the games starting at the same point, and whoever finishes first wins 5 points for that game.  Other teams have five minutes (or however long the end credits take, whichever is longer) to finish the game from there for 3 points.  In either case, all teams then go to the next game.  Once all games have been finished by one team, then they can go back individually to finish any incomplete games, again for 3 points.  The team with the most points after time is up wins!"
      So where do you come in?  I'm glad you asked!  The Versus Mariothon initially lasts 60 hours, beginning Friday, January 14th at 6 pm US Eastern Time and running until the 17th; however, based on donations, for each cumulative multiple of $10 received, the marathon will be extended an extra hour, up to a possible of 12 hours tagged on to the original 60.  This means, for example, the first $10 donated adds on one extra hour, and the second hour is added on once another $20 has been donated, for a total of $30 towards the donation.  For the marathon to be extended by a third hour, another $30 needs to be donated for a total of $60 overall, and so on, so forth.  All donations earned will be sent to the charity DC Outreach.  You'll be helping out in more ways than one with your donations, not just with the charity, but also with team TSR.  From their blog site:
"Dyskeratosis Congenita Outreach, Inc. holds a very special place amongst the members of TSR. Josh Clark, younger brother of Matthew, has an extremely rare genetic disease called Dyskeratosis Congenita or DC. DC has a number of symptoms, the most severe of which is bone marrow failure. 90% of all DC patients will suffer from bone marrow failure. Josh is 18 and loves to play video games. He has been in and out of the hospital most of his life. In the past, the money you generously donated has paid for families to gather and meet others who suffer from this illness. Help us to once again raise money for the DC Outreach family. 100% of your donations go to charity."
     Not to say that's all your donations will gain.  Every $10 you donate will also give you the chance to win a brand new Red Nintendo Wii Bundle, with the winner being drawn at the marathon's conclusion, so the more you donate, the better your chances will be for snagging Nintendo's newly-colored game system!

     So what better way to bring in the New Year of 2011 than with a Versus Marathon of gaming's most iconic hero and series?  Seeing how the plucky plumber just recently celebrated his 25th anniversary, I'd say this is definitely more than fitting.  Team TripleSpeedRunners saw a victory with the Zelda Versus, but will they live up to their namesake and pull out yet another win this time around in a Versus Marathon all about teh speed, or will OceanCityTrinity come thoroughly prepared to snatch up a victory and take the crown resting so comfortably on TSR's head like a warm, red cap?  Tune in for the Mario Versus Marathon in less than a week for the action, excitement, and fun that is sure to ensue!

When does this start and how long will it run?
     The Versus Mariothon begins Friday, January 14th at 6 pm US Eastern TimeIt will initially run for 60 hours, but can be extended by an additional 12 hours for a total length of 72 hours, meaning the marathon could end somewhere between 6 am - 6 pm on Monday, January 17th... the day before I go back to college...

Where can I watch this?
     Aside from each team's respective individual streams, TripleSpeedRunners have also conveniently set up both streams side-by-side on the home page of their website, making it easier for viewers to watch both streams simultaneously if they wish, and for a Versus Marathon based on racing to the finish, you won' want to miss a beat on either team's stream.  I will also be embedding both streams in a single blog post when the time comes, much like I did with the Zelda Versus marathon, so if you wish, you will also be able to view the marathon from my blog here.

What are my donations going towards?
     All donations earned will be sent to the charity DC Outreach.  Their focus is on a rare disease called Dyskeratosis Congenita, and they’re looking to research, treat, and support families of someone with this disease.  All donations go directly to them through the ChipIn donations widget; there is no middle-man, so your money safely goes to a good cause.

So... will you be there to watch, Mr. Gamree...?
     You bet, although I doubt I will be able to participate and watch as much of this marathon as I did the last.  Increase in my work schedule as well as different "housing" circumstances mean that my presence will be more sporadic than last time.  This also means that I won't be doing an up-to-date play-by-play like I did with the Zelda Versus, nor will I be able to record any marathon footage like last time (although I still need to get around to making a montage video from all of that footage sitting on my HDD...).  But fear not!  I still hope to attend and watch as much of the marathon as time allows me to, chattin' it up with fellow viewers when I can and enjoying myself overall.  There are some key games I definitely don't plan on missing for nostalgia-sake, including some of the Paper Marios, Super Mario RPG, and definitely my beloved Super Mario 64.  However, above all, I will be there for one very simple reason:
"Q: What does the winner get?
A: The right to nominate the games to be played for the next versus marathon. And bragging rights.
Q: What about the loser?
A: They have to do the Mario. Like in the cartoon."
     Heck yes.  Kidding or not, watch out. I'm holding you guys to your word on this above everything else.  >=P

Haha!  Cool!  Will you be joining them in "doing the Mario" dance, too, Green Mag-?
     I will hurt you if you even think about suggesting that again.

Oh... er... sowwy...
     Nah, I was a bit brash there.  Hey, there's this awesome Mariothon coming up soon.  Let's go watch it together!

Okay!... wait, who's Mario...?
.............I... can't talk with you any more.............
