Blog of the Green Mage

This Blog is kind of an extension to my Youtube Page, and they pretty much go hand-in-hand. Here I post about what video game playthroughs I am currently doing and which ones I'm thinking about doing in the future, my thoughts on games I've played and gaming news, and maybe just what's been up with me lately.

Monster Hunter 3 (Tri) Playthrough

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Well, finally got my Monster Hunter 3 Playthrough underway. kind had some hitches uploading the vids to youtube, but they'll be up within a couple hours or so. They will all (hopefully) be viewable on youtube. However, to prevent any cluttering of mass posts on this blog concerning both updates on my Red Steel 2 Playthrough and my Monster Hunter 3 Playthrough, I will only be updating posts for my Red Steel 2 Playthrough here on the blog, at least for now. My Red Steel 2 Playthrough is lesser known, having been forced to upload it to Viddler, so to keep people up to date on it I will be focusing the update posts on those videos for now. You can view my first Monster Hunter 3 Playthrough video below, as well as view the playlist in my Video Playthrough List page. I have been extremely excited for this game, and I can't wait to start hunting monsters! Hope you guys enjoy!

Parts 14 - 16 of my Red Steel 2 Playthrough have been uploaded to Viddler, so go check them out whenever you get the chance. I will be attempting to upload 1 to 3 videos a day, even during my Monster Hunter 3 Playthrough, so keep checking back for updates.

Red Steel 2 Playthrough Part 14 - Path to the Tower

Description: "We can see it, standing there, mighty and powerful above our heads. So close, and yet, the path to it will be very long and arduous... mostly because of my failures along the way..."
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Red Steel 2 Playthrough Part 15 - The Man in Blue

Description: He doesn't really play a big part in this video, but I did find it interesting how much he stood out. "I think I'll wear blue today..."
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Red Steel 2 Playthrough Part 16 - Tamiko Fails

Description: "Tamiko's holed up in a building... surrounded by Jackals... again... It's like Ubisoft is awefully close to making fun of a certain princess...

Also, her logic is border-line unreasonable. Glad to have you around, Tamiko. What would we do without you...? On the flip-side, I get one of the more useful Hidden Strikes. Yus!"

Gametrailers Reviews Monster Hunter Tri (3)

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Gametrailers just put up their video review on Monster Hunter Tri (3) today. For those wondering why I've singled out both the IGN and Gametrailers reviews, it's because these are my two main go-to sources for reviews on video games.  Whether I actually agree with the reviews and scores is another thing, but I always found both sites to be deep enough in their reviews about a game for me to understand how the game will feel and whether or not it will be worth a buy or not.  You will probably see future posts like these reporting on the release of IGN and GT reviews, but they will hopefully be in a single post or at least on the same day.  IGN's weird and incredibly early release of their Monster Hunter review kinda threw it off this time, but seeing how both sites usually release reviews on either the Friday or Monday before a game's release, it shouldn't be too hard to combine the two.

Watch the video review below or go to the actual Gametrailers page to watch it.

Okay, so on to my own thoughts about the review.  Since GT focuses purely on video reviews with no regard to written reviews, it can be a bit harder for me to comment on them.  The game's large amount of content and how it will keep players occupied for around 30 hours alone in the offline mode alone was quite impressive in and of itself.  The GT review also commends the game for fixing the camera controls present in past iterations of the game, as well as the different control set-ups it allows people to choose from.  Again, GT says the Classic Controller "is where it's at," making me feel all the worse that I somehow feel more comfortable with the Wii-mote and Nunchuk controls.  Maybe that will change once I play the actual game with the Classic Controller Pro, but I have a feeling it won't.  Perhaps the biggest point GT went out of their way to make in the video review can be summed up by the sentence(s), "Listen well, Nintendo and other Wii developers: this is how you do online right."  GT calls MH3's online "unmatched on the platform," with four-player hunts, text and voice chat, lobbies, lack of Friend Codes, etc.  While this doesn't come as any surprise at all, it is nice to hear consistency between reviews on MH3's amazing online.

Although there weren't many, GT still expanded upon some of the game's lower points, several of which were, once again, mostly aimed at players new to the franchise.  Despite the different control schemes, GT called them complex, with each set up requiring some time to get accustomed to before becoming efficient with it.  The review also lightly went over the game's visuals and feel, upholding the monsters' realistic animations and the atmospheric environments, while noting the constant frequency of load screens and how "Monster Hunter 3 looks good, but doesn't raise the visual bar."  GT also points out that this is a game based heavily on developing a strategy with each monster and having a sound plan before heading off into battle, warning that "...simply leaping before you look will result in your demise..."  As this will be the first Monster Hunter game for many, myself included, this is again the same warning IGN gave to newcomers who believe this is just another hack-and-slash game.  Seeing how the demo was available nearly a month before the actual game's release, I am hoping that this will be enough for people to understand just how the game's combat works, yet at the same time, I am kind of worried that the demo's main focus on combat might lead new hunters into mistaking this as all there is to the game, when in fact there are other things you will be required to do in the game, such as searching and gathering materials, quests that don't require hunting and killing, farming of  weapon materials by killing the same monster repeatedly, etc.  I bought (not beat) the original Monster Hunter game for the PS2 to somewhat better prepare myself for MH3's arrival, and if the game's beginning is anything like the original, I can already say that the first several quests could be quite a grind before the action begins to really pick up.  As GT says, "If you can't stand the grind, then Monster Hunter Tri probably isn't for you."

Good review, in my opinion, and I'm still stoked for the game, which I will hopefully receive in the mail sometime tomorrow.  Just... have... to wait... one... more... day...  =P

48-Hour Zelda Marathon on USTREAM

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Just stumbled across a 48-hour Zelda Marathon stream on USTREAM.  He'll be playing through the four 3D Zelda games - Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess.  He's only been streaming for about half an hour I think from when I posted this.  It is a donation stream, so you don't have to pay to watch or anything, but the money goes towards providing children in hospitals with toys and video games, so if you would like to donate, feel free to do so.  Think of the children!  Those hospital kids need video games!  =O  Click here to watch the stream. The stream ends 4 pm Pacific time Sunday, so drop by any time before then!  You'll also probably find me hanging out around there for the next few days, so you can chat it up with me if you get the chance.  =D

Check out the Zelda Marathon Blog here to learn more about it and donate money.  Donators will also have a chance to win points cards for either the Wii, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360. Anyone who donates at least five dollars will be entered in a raffle to win one of three $20 card, or one $50 card. (Points will only work on North American consoles) The winners will be contacted by their PayPal email account to ask which system they would like their points cards for, and an email will be sent back to them with the download code for their points.

IGN Reviews Monster Hunter Tri (3)

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Oddly enough, IGN just put up their Monster Hunter Tri Review today, nearly a week before the game is set to release (next Tuesday).  Usually IGN waits until the Monday, or at the earliest I've ever seen, the Friday before a game is set to release before they put up their review on it, but I don't think I have never seen them put up a review nearly a week before a game's release date.  Either way, it's there, and of course, I'm going to link you guys to it here for easier access.  Click here for the written review.

IGN Monster Hunter Tri Video Review

Monster Hunter Tri at IGN.com

"...Monster Hunter Tri isn't a game for everyone. It's a dense product with a learning curve higher than most other Wii titles available. It requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to learn from your mistakes. The challenges you'll face in Monster Hunter will seem insurmountable at times, but with the correct planning and skillful play you'll be able to slice your way through and move on to the next. Overcoming daunting obstacles is part of what makes playing Monster Hunter so rewarding, and the game gives you the option to do so offline by yourself or with friends. With an impressive online suite for social interaction and questing, Monster Hunter's deep gameplay and upgrade systems are made even better, letting you bask in the shared glory and benefits of bringing down enormous, dangerous beasts. Better yet, this version of the game can be played with minimal camera control frustration provided you're using a Classic Controller or Pro version, and is the prettiest entry in the franchise released outside of Japan. For those who prefer games that reward skill and offer huge amount of options for varied play style, character customization, and a vast amount of content, look no further. This is the best Monster Hunter yet, and even if there's still a lot that's familiar for franchise fans, it remains a totally unique and engrossing action-RPG experience..."
     ~Charles Onyett

After reading and watching the review, it seems the only few complaints IGN has with the game are the loading screens, the steep learning curve and repetitive nature the game will have for newcomers (more of a warning than an actual issue), and most importantly the game's inconsistent controls, which, while an improvement over past iterations of the game, could still be vastly improved on.  In my personal opinion, if the game loads as fast as it does in the demo, or even twice as long, th loading times will not be an issue for me.  I'm aware of the steep learning curve for the franchise, but I'm still willing to tough it out in order to play the game, so much so that I even bought the original Monster Hunter on the PS2 a couple of days ago to be able to get a bit better at understanding the game's structure.  The gripe about the controls will probably be my biggest concern with the game, as even with the demo I am having some difficulty adjusting to the controls, on the Classic Controller at least.  I've become accustomed to using the Wii-mote and Nunchuk quite efficiently, but whenever I make the transition to the Classic Controller, I seem to become incredibly disoriented because the controls aren't what I believe they should be.  Seeing how everyone else says that the Classic Controller is a better solution than the Wii-mote/Nunchuk combo, maybe I'm just weird like that.  =P

Overall, IGN gave the game a score of 8.8, which seems a bit lower than what I was expecting, and how they made the game sound.  I was expecting the game to receive around a 9.2, or at least breach the 9.0 mark.  That said, obviously I haven't played the actual game yet, and am only basing my opinions on what I've seen and know from research and not on actual game experience just yet.  I may or may not write my own review on the game after extensively playing it myself, but to try and do one right now would be pretty stupid.  Either way, I am excited for this game, and next Tuesday just won't come fast enough.  >.<

First Post, New Blog

Posted by Gamree the Green Mage

Hey everyone, Gamree here.  Finally got around to setting up a new blog for my Youtube channel.  You'll have to excuse me while I still make some changes to this blog's look and layout over the next few weeks.  Still, it should at least be functional for now.  I will be posting updates here about my Youtube Channel and the latest videos and video playthroughs that I am uploading to my channel, as well as a list of games I've already completed Playthroughs of and future games I am considering playing through.  I will also occasionally post some of my own personal thoughts on games I've played and the latest gaming news if it interests me, and maybe I'll eventually write a game review or two if I find myself with some extra time to spare.  This blog will hopefully also allow you guys to get to know me better.  And for those of you who stumble across this blog and are new, welcome, and you can find my Youtube channel by clicking here.

I had been looking at both Blogger and Wordpress for this blog, and if it isn't obvious by now, I decided to go with Blogger over WordPress for the time being, mostly due to its ease of use and the ability to export this blog to WordPress later on if I decide to make the change over, which I probably will.  WordPress seemed like the better choice, but required too much set-up, and I just don't have the time right now to mess around with that.  So Blogger it is! =D
